Design Dissertation
Design Dissertation:
Megalopolitan Metabolism

A thesis for my Bachelor's in Architecture, exploring the idea of sustainable building practices for extremely unsustainable programmes. In an energy-intensive building where "sustainable architecture" staples such as natural light and ventilation, or water harvesting and recycling are not possible, how can we design a building that conserves energy and is not detrimental to the environment?
Dissertation Design
Carrying forward some of the ideologies from the volume, I designed a building for a Nanotechnology Research Centre in IIT Bombay. A large part of the design was ensuring that all the laboratories and clean rooms were highly functional and adaptable, so new equipment with finer requirements would not necessitate the construction of an entirely new set of labs.
Site Mapping
A series of maps delineating site conditions and ecology of the area
Lab Layouts
Determining the area required by equipment and designing clean room layouts accordingly
Design Drawings
Plans and sections showing the landscape and form of the building
Structure
Structural systems in place to create the specialised architecture used to house the labs
